Overview

Discover Yamo, a tiny but legendary Burmese restaurant located at 3406 18th St, San Francisco, CA 94110, United States, in the heart of the Mission District. Known for wok-tossed noodles, bold Burmese-inspired flavors, remarkably affordable prices, and a no-frills counter setting, this neighborhood institution proves that memorable food does not require an elaborate dining room. For questions or takeout orders, Yamo can be reached at +1 415-553-8911.

The menu is compact but surprisingly diverse, covering noodles, fried rice, curries, tofu, seafood, vegetables, and a handful of distinctive appetizers. Most main dishes are priced at roughly $8–$10, making Yamo in San Francisco an increasingly rare bargain in a city known for expensive dining. Vegetarian and vegan-friendly choices such as vegetable curry, curry tofu, mushroom tofu, and vegetable noodles provide welcome flexibility. The restaurant is primarily suited to dinner, takeout, solo dining, and casual meals rather than large groups.

The Yamo House Noodles are the essential first order. Garlic-forward noodles are wok-tossed with a choice of meat, producing a combination of savory richness, subtle sweetness, and fried-garlic crunch. Another signature dish is the Tea Leaf Salad, praised for its lively balance of acidity, savoriness, fresh vegetables, beans, and crunchy textures. For diners wanting something sweeter and more substantial, Mango Chicken combines tender chicken with fruity, tangy notes that distinguish it from the restaurant’s straightforward curries.

Customer feedback consistently emphasizes both flavor and value. One recent diner summarized the experience as “Good food, good price, good service,” after sampling several noodle and fish dishes. Other customers repeatedly recommend the house noodles, cold noodles, tea leaf salad, samusas, and garlic noodles. Current listings show Yamo holding approximately 4.4 stars from more than 880 Google reviews, reflecting an impressive level of loyalty for such a small establishment.

The atmosphere is one of Yamo’s defining features. Instead of conventional tables, the restaurant offers only a handful of counter seats overlooking a fast-moving kitchen. The room is narrow, energetic, and unapologetically simple. Watching dishes hit the wok directly in front of the counter adds personality, although limited seating and occasional waits are clear drawbacks during busy periods. Takeout is often the easier choice, and customers should also remember that the restaurant is cash only.

Crispy samusas, inexpensive soft drinks, vegetarian dishes, and made-to-order wok cooking add further appeal. The absence of polished décor becomes part of the charm rather than a weakness.

Among the best restaurants in San Francisco for affordable Burmese food and authentic local dining experiences, Yamo stands out for character, value, and deeply satisfying noodles. Visit Yamo for the House Noodles, Tea Leaf Salad, or Mango Chicken and experience one of the Mission District’s most enduring hole-in-the-wall favorites.

I'm an Angeleno who is moving to San Francisco for school so I figured I might as well check out the food scene. For context the first time I ever experienced Burmese food was when I was 10 and funny enough, also in San Francisco. Second time with experiencing Burmese food I am so glad that I chose Yamo. Do not expect a typical dining experience with being seated and treated like a princess, Michelle and her mother are the only two working here and they make sure you're treated like a friend. Their beef noodles, samusa, and chicken curry are a flavor explosion and you will have spent the best $23 of your life for all three of those items if you do go.

You want the house Garlic Noodles and nothing else. We are obsessed with chili crisps, but these noodles are as pure as they come. Don’t try to fix what isn’t broken. Come in for a quick bowl of these bad boys. Don’t change a thing. You won’t be disappointed.

Such a good experience! The food just hits the spot! We had Tea leaf salad, egg rolls, tofu house noodles with their chili oil. All of this just for $21!! Everything is under 8 bucks .. cash only.. 8 seats to dine in.. must try!

Cute small and family owned business, tight seating area in front of the kitchen so if that’s not your thing you can order to go. Tasty food and easy to share, very simple menu with homemade vibes, we really enjoyed watching how they prepare each dish.

The only way you would know about this place is through word of mouth or if you know someone local. Pretty hidden spot - or atleast you wouldn't notice it until you see a line outside. I came here on a Thursday night and there was a queue outside the place like around 8:30 PM. So the place is definitely popular. Given the wait times - I decided to go with a to go box. The ambience is pretty average - it's a small place. They pretty much cook in front of you seperated by a table. Talking about food - it's very simple and cheap. I tried Tofu Mushroom and I liked it. Not much going on - just simple homely food. Maybe that's what pull people here.

Tiny, diner style, Asian comfort food spot in the mission district. Friday night, we waited about 45mins for a spot to sit for dinner. Ordered the tra leaf salad, egg rolls, samsusas, curry chicken, mango chicken, cold noodles, and some other stuff. Overall it's good, relatively healthy. Fresh ingredients and made to order. Taste wise, it was fine. Not many negatives. Nothing fancy to honest. It is very affordable for 2025 and being in the heart of the city which is definitely a plus. If you want a simple, somewhat hearty, affordable, Asian meal that's made to order, this is your spot. Otherwise, it's not fancy and nothing impressive. I think to go orders are better here if you're in a rush. Might be back.
